NEW YORK – The BIG EAST Men’s and Women’s Soccer Championships Presented by Jeep will be played at the Maryland SoccerPlex in Boyds, Md., beginning in 2022, the conference announced Wednesday. The deal spans three years and includes the 2022, 2023 and 2024 playoffs. Since 2015, the men’s and women’s championship semi-finals and finals have been held at BIG EAST campus venues.

BIG EAST’s move to the Maryland SoccerPlex follows a joint recommendation from both coaching groups to hold the events at a neutral venue.

“This is a great opportunity to showcase some of the best college footballers in the country,” said Chris Schneider, Executive Associate Commissioner for Sports Administration and Championships. “The Maryland SoccerPlex has a history of hosting incredible soccer events and we look forward to working with them and their community of young soccer players to create memorable experiences for our student-athletes.”

The Maryland SoccerPlex is a 24-field complex that welcomes more than one million visitors a year. Opened in 2000, the Maryland SoccerPlex was built through a public-private partnership between the Maryland Soccer Foundation and the Maryland National-Capital Park and Planning Commission (MNCPPC). At the center of the Maryland SoccerPlex is Maureen Hendrick’s home field at Championship Stadium. This exceptional ground offers an intimate atmosphere to all the matches played here. The pitch sits low in a bowl-shaped stadium and is surrounded by 3,200 hard seats, with a total capacity of 5,000.

“The Maryland SoccerPlex is thrilled to host the BIG EAST Championships for the next three years,” said Matt Libber, Executive Director of the Maryland SoccerPlex. “The BIG EAST represents some of the best men’s and women’s soccer programs in the NCAA, which gives us the opportunity to showcase our facilities nationally, bring top-level soccer to our community, and provide a vast experience to student-athletes and their families in Maryland.”

Similar to previous seasons, the first-round format for the Men’s and Women’s Championships will see the No. 3 seed host the No. 6 seed and the No. 4 seed host the No. 5. The women’s first round will be played on Sunday October 30, while the men will open the post-season competition on Saturday November 5.

The winners will advance to the semi-finals at the Maryland SoccerPlex, with the women’s semi-final scheduled for Thursday, November 3 and the title match on Sunday, November 6 at 1:30 p.m. ET on FS1. The men’s semi-final will take place on Thursday November 10, before the title match on Sunday November 13.

On the women’s side, Georgetown has won five of the last six championship crowns, most recently beating St. John’s 1-0 in the fall. On Thursday, September 22 at 7 p.m., a rematch of the BIG EAST 2021 title match will be played at the Maryland SoccerPlex between the Red Storm and Hoyas.

On the men’s side, Georgetown have won four of the last five league titles, edging Providence in overtime last season, 3-2. Ahead of the 2022 campaign, Providence was selected by the head coaches as a one-point pre-season favorite over the Hoyas, despite the Blue & Gray leading with seven first-place votes.

Ticket information for the Men’s and Women’s Soccer Championships will be announced at a later date.
