Second year Brianna Navarrosa carded a par 72 for her fourth consecutive round of par or better to lead the No. 8 USC women’s golf team effort in the first round of the NCAA Championships at Grayhawk GC on Friday, May 20 in Scottsdale , Arizona.

The Trojans combined for a 10-of-298 opening effort, battling high winds in the afternoon surge, and are tied for eighth in the 24-team field. Stanford, the highest ranked, is first at 1 in 289.

The top 15 teams after three rounds advance to Monday’s final round, where the top eight teams after 72 holes advance to the NCAA Championships match play draw.

“This group should be so proud of how they fought and held on through this incredibly tough round,” said the fourth-year USC head coach. Justin Silverstein mentioned. “We got off to a very difficult start but held on well when the conditions started to get very risky.”

Three-time national title winners USC are trying to return to match play after missing it for the first time in the format’s six seasons last year.

Navarrosa, tied for sixth and the only Trojan to play in the NCAA last year, led the way on Friday. It started with a pair of bogeys and she was 3 of 10, but she birdied 12 to start a regular streak and finished with birdies on 17 and 18.

“Today was all about patience,” she said after her 13th par-or-better round this season. “One mental mistake and it would cost you. Throughout the day I took each blow one at a time. Being patient and keeping my emotions in check is what kept me going until the end. I trusted that at some point, putts would fall no matter how long it took. That’s golf.

First-year student Amari Avery also had a strong ride and is tied for 27th at 2 of 74. She shot par and came home at 2 of 74.

First-year student Xin (Cindy) Ko and second Michaela Morard each birdied 18 to post 4 of 76s. They are tied for 55th place. Senior Katherine Muzi was the score without counting today with an 82.

USC will start the second round on Saturday at 7:25 a.m. PT.
