IIT Bombay has announced a strategic collaboration with Eros Investments, a leading global portfolio of media, entertainment and technology companies, to design and develop Kurosawa, an AI-based tool for automatic scenario writing.
Named after acclaimed Japanese director Akira Kurosawa, Kurosawa is a groundbreaking attempt to equip the entertainment industry with state-of-the-art technology to generate a feature film script.
The software will help filmmakers develop the plot and script of movies. IIT Bombay will also create a white paper on Kurosawa for academic and research purposes.
HOW WILL THE KUROSAWA AI TOOL WORK?
The IIT Bombay and Eros teams have been collaborating on Kurosawa for over a year. Kurosawa will help identify the right genre, release connecting line, and synopsis and provide a potentially hit script that can be further customized as needed.
In the current phase, Kurosawa can generate multiple storylines and engaging scenes based on a single entry.
For example, it can create basic genres of genre-specific movie plots and a short 2-3 sentence prompt. It can also create scenes in a standard script format based on a brief description.
Automatic generation of video scripts is a subfield of natural language generation (NLG). The machine can learn plot and scene generation from pre-existing data with minimal human intervention.
PRINCIPAL RESEARCHER ON THE PROJECT
Kurosawa is based on the latest deep learning and natural language processing technologies. It is led by Professor Pushpak Bhattacharyya, known for his expertise in artificial intelligence and machine learning, and an internationally renowned research group.
He is a Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at IIT Bombay and is a Fellow of the National Academy of Engineering (2015) and Abdul Kalam National Fellow (2020). The Bhattacharyya teachers are supported in this project by the students of IIT Bombay who are part of the program.
WHAT THE EXPERTS HAVE TO SAY
Commenting on the occasion, Swaneet Singh, Director of Eros Investments, said, “This partnership between Eros Investments and IIT Bombay is a great example of the fusion of left and right brains.
“Kurosawa is a pioneering, cutting-edge technology that will revolutionize the entertainment industry. The tool will allow screenwriters to focus on creativity and quality while setting the stage for them,” he said.
“This innovation marks a new milestone for Eros Investments which will be used as a case study in the future,” he added.
IIT Bombay Research and Development Dean, Professor Milind Atrey said, “Kurosawa will be a huge opportunity to transform the art of storytelling competently and improve the efficiency of content creators.
