GSK deploys Endpoint Manager for cloud migration


Multinational pharmaceutical company GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) used Microsoft Endpoint Manager to accelerate its transition to the cloud, following a widespread shift to working from home in early 2020.

The solution enables GSK to adopt a more resilient workplace and enable provisioning of devices from anywhere without IT intervention, according to a customer story posted on the Microsoft website.

“Our people need a highly secure system that will delight them as much as possible and make them really perform well,” said Michael Freedberg, Director of Modern Workplace Engineering at GSK. “Their access to services and data, and their ability to collaborate with others in highly regulated environments, all come through the devices they use. “

Previously, GSK’s application installations and system management were only accessible through its internal network, limiting employees who wanted to continue the work they had started in the home office. Web-based device management services such as Intune and Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager have been deployed to allow employees to access data easily and securely.

“We’ve seen that if you want people to work smoothly and efficiently and feel productive at home or wherever they are, we need to make it transparent and offer them the same set of services they’re used to when. they work. in the office, ”Freedberg said.

“We focused on installing, configuring, and managing cloud management gateways for our Internet-connected Configuration Manager customers,” said Freedberg. “Previously, a person couldn’t install software from the Internet from our existing on-demand tool and had to open a VPN connection instead. With Endpoint Manager, we make every application available through Software Center, so there is no distinction whether you are inside or outside the main organization. We can then deploy apps, update policies, and configure internet devices right from Endpoint Manager.

GSK uses Endpoint Manager as a command center to enable a productive and secure workforce and to unify Microsoft 365 applications and services with traditional and modern endpoint management to optimize IT productivity and reduce costs .

Already, the business has benefited from deploying policy configurations and collecting device diagnostic logs while minimizing or eliminating downtime entirely: connect to the VPN and try to get a subset of the log files, we just use Intune to collect the diagnostic logs from the device and get a .zip file with 50 event logs and all kinds of data that we can look it offline, ”Freedberg said. “We get everything we need and our client has nothing to do. “

GSK will continue to test and deploy cloud devices until 2022. At the same time, GSK is testing Windows Autopilot to speed up installation and configuration of new devices for all of its users and AzureAD to support a pure cloud environment.
