FC Aberdeen | 20 clubs join the first Scottish Women’s Premier League

The first Annual General Meeting (“AGM”) of the Scottish Women’s Premier League (“SWPL”) took place today [25 May] at Hampden Park.

The historic meeting saw the creation of SWPL1 with twelve teams (from the previous top tier of ten teams) alongside the creation of SWPL2 with eight teams entering the league.

With 20 teams now confirmed across both leagues, alongside the appointment of the SWPL Trustees, this officially concludes the adoption of professional women’s football into the new format designed to develop and promote women’s football across Scotland.

The inaugural clubs of the SWPL are:

  • Dundee United FC
  • FC Glasgow City
  • Glasgow Women FC
  • FC Hamilton Academicals
  • Heart of Midlothian FC
  • FC Hibernian
  • Motherwell F.C.
  • Partick Thistle
  • Rangers F.C.
  • FC Spartans

SWPL2

  • Boroughmuir Thistle FC
  • FC East Fife
  • FC Gartcairn
  • FC Kilmarnock
  • Montrose F.C.
  • Queen’s Park F.C.
  • St Johnstone F.C.
  • University of Stirling F.C.

In addition, the following persons were elected directors of the SWPL Board of Directors, representing

SWPL Clubs: Chris Duffy (Celtic FC), Andrew McKinlay (Heart of Midlothian FC), Amy McDonald (Rangers FC), Laura Montgomery (Glasgow City FC) and Zola McGoIdrick (Boroughmuir Thistle FC)

Fiona McIntyre, Acting Chief Executive of the SWPL, said: “This is a historic day for Scottish women’s football.

“I am delighted to welcome the first 20 clubs to the new league and congratulate the first club-appointed directors on their election to the SWPL Board.

“It is important to recognize all the hard work that has gone into getting us to this place. Scottish women’s football can now look to the future with confidence thanks to the hard work and commitment of so many people over so many years.
